James (JW) Windland
January 19, 1949 - December 25, 2014
JW (James) Windland passed away on December 25 due to oral cancer.
JW was a born leader. He challenged forms of discrimination in high school when elected class president, inspired students as a high school English teacher (winning the Illinois state teaching award several times), led his church community in gay pride events, and founded Encounter to break down the boundaries between people. Through Encounter, James reached approximately 100,000 people and left lasting impressions on many. He fought for justice, exhibited compassion and generosity, and had an insatiable curiosity to learn about people and their stories. He was a born storyteller whose deep voice will live in many people's minds for years to come. He is survived by his daughter Kirstin, his sisters Ann and June and their families, his beloved dog Margaret, many friends, and a small legion of fans.
